New Federal E.Coli and Salmonella Program

A Food Safety Working Group created by President Obama early in his administration has announced new recommendations and standards that will hopefully reduce salmonella in poultry as well as increase sampling of products for E.Coli.

The group has stated that their three main goals are: Preventing harm to consumers, which is their first priority. Effective food safety inspections and enforcement. And the quick identification of outbreaks of food borne illness.

The group has said that by the end of the month more recommendations will be released to help prevent E.Coli and Salmonella. They also plan to issue draft guidance on steps the food industry can take to establish product tracing systems to improve national capacity for detecting the origins of food borne illness within the next three months.
